In March 2017,  we linked into Peterhead Academy and in particular to student Steven Rae, who has an extraordinary talent for painting portraits.

Artventure helped to promote Steven’s work after discovering he had recently completed a portrait of Sir Ian McKellen, which had been acknowledged by the actor himself – our post congratulating Steven’s achievement reached 40,000+ people all over the world and attracted inspiring comments and praise from an international audience.

As a result, we put Steven in touch with local media, resulting in coverage from various newspapers including the Buchan ObserverPress and JournalDaily Record, Evening Express as well as a television interview with STV News.

Artventure members supported Steven following a commission made through Aberdeenshire Council – including visiting the Discovery Centre in Mintlaw where he was able to explore different archives and photographs from the area before settling on an unnamed fisherman.

MODO provided an artist space, canvas and materials to complete the commission during Summer 2017. The commission was also the first time that Steven had worked with oil paints as he had no experience with them prior.

The finished commission and it’s name – Timeless – was revealed at Peterhead Academy’s “Design Uncovered” annual art exhibition which showcased the works of art pupils from S1 to S6.

Following it’s reveal, the painting has been exhibited in Arbuthnot Museum in Peterhead where local residents have enjoyed Steven’s artwork and learned the history – or lack thereof – of the subject in the painting.
